Why Local and Naturally Raised Animal Meat Test Better

There’s one big reason meat from a “humane farm” tastes so good, and it has nothing to do with farms.
According to new research, merely being told that meat is produced humanely can make it taste completely different to us. In a study conducted at Northeastern University, people rated meat as looking, tasting and smelling better when they were told it was raised on a humane farm instead of a factory farm, even if that wasn’t true.
These results provide more evidence that simple descriptions can change the way we see ― and taste ― all sorts of foods.

For the study, researchers fed college students three kinds of meat samples: jerky, roast beef and ham. The meat in each sample group was all the same, but it came paired with varying descriptions. Some meat was labeled as “humanely raised” at a farm that “values animal welfare,” and other meat was “produced on a factory farm” where animals are “confined in pens.”
After reading and eating, students rated the taste. Meat described as “humanely raised” won out on every single tasting factor when compared to “factory farmed” meat, even thought the meat itself was exactly the same. Students ate less of the “factory farmed” jerky, and they reported “factory farmed” ham as tasting greasier, saltier and less fresh.
This matches what other research has already suggested: The way we label our food greatly impacts how we feel about it. For example, people rate wine as tasting better when they’re told it’s expensive, and higher prices can make us feel less guilty about overindulging at a buffet.
We can only imagine what would happen if we told ourselves that deep-fried Big Macs were nutritious.
The better choice for the environment, of course, is to go meatless. Cutting back on meat while eating more fruits and veggies could reduce greenhouse gas emissions, halt climate change and improve your health. Now THAT’S a story we’d all be happy to hear.

Eight Foods To Avoid If You Have Arthritis

What U Ate
1. Inflammatory Foods
Arthritis is a general term encompassing conditions that share joint pain and inflammation. Typical treatment involves pain-reducing medication. While there is no definitive arthritis diet, research suggests including anti-inflammatory foods in your diet and limiting foods that may trigger joint pain.
Click “next” to learn about the arthritis trigger foods you should avoid.

2. Fried & Processed Foods
Researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine examined disease prevention through diet. Findings showed that “cutting back on the consumption of fried and processed foods, such as fried meats and prepared frozen meals, can reduce inflammation and actually help restore the body’s natural defenses.”
What you can do: Cut down on the amount of fried and processed foods you consume, and include more vegetables and fruits in your diet.

3. Lower Your AGEs
AGE doesn’t refer to how many birthdays you’ve celebrated. An advanced glycation end product (AGE), is a toxin that appears when foods are heated, grilled, fried, or pasteurized. AGEs damage certain proteins in the body, and the body tries to break these AGEs apart by using cytokines, which are inflammatory messengers. Depending on where the AGEs occur, they may result in arthritis or other forms of inflammation.
What you can do: A 2009 study found that reducing the amount of foods cooked at high temperatures in your diet could potentially help reduce blood AGE levels.

4. Sugars & Refined Carbs
High amounts of sugar in the diet result in an increase in AGEs, which, as discussed in an earlier slide, can result in inflammation.
What you can do: Cut out candies, processed foods, white flour baked goods, and sodas to reduce your arthritis pain.
5. Dairy Product
Dairy products may contribute to arthritis pain due to the type of protein they contain. According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, for some people this protein may irritate the tissue around the joints. Some sufferers of arthritis pain have success switching to a vegan diet—which contains no animal products whatsoever.
What you can do: Rather than getting protein from meat and dairy, get the bulk of your protein sources from vegetables like spinach, nut butters, tofu, beans, lentils, and quinoa.
6. Alcohol & Tobacco
Tobacco and alcohol use can lead to a number of health problems, including some that may affect your joints. Smokers are more at risk for developing rheumatoid arthritis, while those who consume alcohol have a higher risk for developing gout.
What you can do: Healthy joints require a balanced diet, physical activity, and an adequate amount of rest—all of which can be compromised by alcohol and tobacco use. Cut back on drinking and smoking and ramp up your eating habits with healthy choices, regular exercise, and good quality sleep.
7. Salt & Preservatives
Know what’s in your food. Many foods contain excessive salt and other preservatives to promote longer shelf lives. For some people, excess consumption of salt may result in inflammation of the joints. It may be worth trying to reduce your salt intake to as modest an amount as is reasonable.
What you can do:  Read the label to avoid preservatives and additives. Less salt may help you manage your arthritis, so avoid prepared meals. Though they’re convenient, microwavable meals are often very high in sodium.
8. Corn Oil

Many baked goods and snacks contain corn or other oils high in omega-6 fatty acids. While these treats may satisfy your taste buds, they may trigger inflammation. Some studies have looked at the pain-relieving effects of omega-3s on individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, and have found that fish oil, which contains omega-3s, may help with joint pain relief in certain people.
What you can do: Replace foods containing omega-6 fatty acids with healthy, anti-inflammatory omega-3 alternatives such as olive oil, nuts, flax seeds, and pumpkin seeds.

The United Nations has warns that some 5.5 million people might go hungry in Nigeria

What U Ate

The United Nations has warned that some 5.5 million people might go hungry in Nigeria’s north east region by next month due to attacks by Boko Haram and the economic crisis.

World Food Programme officials say food aid has been delivered to close to 170.000 people in the region and hopes to reach 700.000 people by next year.

... malnutrition, starvation and deaths from hunger in Africa exaggerated
“ The drop in oil prices and the sharp rise in the cost of imported staples has compounded the years of violence that these poor people had to suffer. So we are concerned, our experts are warning that it could go as high as 5.5 million people by next month,” WFP spokeswoman, Bettina Luescher said.
The UN High Commission for Refugees says the situation remains dangerous and volatile following an attack on an aid convoy last month.

“On 27th of July, you’ve heard here before, a U.N. convoy was attacked, this was with an improvise explosive device, with gunfire, it resulted in injuries to three humanitarian as well as two members of the military escort,“UNHCR spokesman, Andrian Edwards said.
The UNHCR explain that there is an urgent need to provide psycho-social support to women and girls who were recently released by Boko Haram as their trauma levels were high.
Many of the women are pregnant or have given birth in Boko Haram camps and do not want to speak openly to humanitarian groups.

The Effect of Spicy Food Consumption

What U Ate

Do you like to challenge the chef at your local African restaurant to make your meal as hot as possible? Does the experience feel incomplete if the food doesn't send streams of sweat flowing down your face?
Your friends may poke fun, but you can tell them you're doing it for your health.
There are plenty of benefits to eating spicy foods, including the possibility of a longer life, albeit just a little bit.
But like so many other things, spicy food has good and bad sides. For most people, the good will outweigh the bad.

The Good Side of it

  • A longevity boost: a study in 2015 that included over half a million Chinese found that people who consumed spicy foods — that is, scorching — foods six times a week reduced their risk of death by 14 percent during the course of the seven-year study. Consuming fiery foods just two days a week lowered the risk by 10 percent, compared to people who ate milder fare.
  • Weight loss: Studies have shown that hot peppers can help curb appetite and speed metabolism. In a 2011 study, researchers from Purdue University found people felt more satiated after eating spicy foods. An earlier study found that people consumed less fat after eating high amounts of hot peppers. There's probably also an effect on metabolism, says Dr. Gregory Thorkelson, an assistant professor in the departments of psychiatry and gastroenterology at the University of Pittsburgh. "That's why you Lfeel hot after you eat spicy food," he adds. "And there is some data to show that capsaicin [the ingredient that produces the scorched feeling in your mouth] can increase the ability to burn calories." Another possibility is that the fire in your mouth slows food consumption, says Dana Hunnes, a senior dietitian and professor at the Fielding School of Public Health at UCLA. "If you eat more slowly, you're more likely to notice your body's satiety cues."
  • Pain relief: Capsaicin has been shown to spark the release of the body's own opioids — endorphins, Thorkelson says, although much of the data on this comes from topical administration of the chemical rather than oral consumption.
  • Anti-inflammatory effects: There is data to suggest that capsaicin might help with autoimmune conditions, like rheumatoid arthritis, Thorkelson says, adding that these types of illnesses are less common in countries where a lot of spicy food is consumed.
  • Antimicrobial effects: Studies show that capsaicin has antibacterial effects, and possibly also to a lesser degree, antifungal effects, Thorkelson says. This is why hot peppers have been used as a food preservative, Hunnes says.

5 Foods Men Must Eat to Increase Sperm Count and Performance

What U Ate

5 Foods to Increase Sperm Count

If you’re having trouble getting pregnant, there’s at least a 30% chance it’s because of male fertility problems. That’s why it’s so important to eat the right foods! The bottom line is that you need to eat a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, and limit your intake of alcohol, sugar, refined food products, junk food, and fat.
Eating the right food can increase your sperm motility and count, and improve your fertility levels. What you eat has a direct effect on your physical health and fertility levels – including your sperm count.

1. Red peppers, carrots, oatmeal, dried apricots

The vitamin A in these foods help grow healthy sperm and improve male fertility.
food to increase sperm motility“Deficiencies in vitamin A in men have been linked to lowered fertility due to sluggish sperm,” writes Heidi Murkoff in What to Expect Before You’re Expecting. To increase sperm count and motility, eat dark green lettuce, broccoli, spinach, sweet potatoes, and dairy fortified with vitamin A.
And yes, you can make spaghetti sauce with red peppers, carrots, dried apricots, and oatmeal! The apricots add a lovely sweet flavor to the sauce, and the oatmeal binds the ground beef together.
Research shows that there has been a significant decline in male fertility, including sperm count, throughout the developed world over the past several decades. Environmental factors such as endocrine disruptors are related to low sperm count.
how to recover sperm
Quick sperm health tip: If you’re worried about your sperm count or sperm health, and you’ve been trying to get pregnant for months or years, try Fertility Blend for Men. It’s the bestselling male fertility supplement on the market. It’s a supplement, which means you still need to eat the right foods to increase your sperm count and improve your fertility.
New research shows that exposure to aluminum has increased significantly, and aluminum has been found in individual male sperm. Aluminum in the environment is a potential contributor to these changes in reproductive fertility.

2. Asparagus, snow peas, cooked tomatoes, strawberries

The vitamin C in these foods affect sperm motility and viability (how fast and effectively they swim). Vitamin C and vitamin A are found in many of the same foods: kale, red peppers, sweet potatoes, yellow veggies and fruits. The antioxidants in these foods help increase sperm count by decreasing harmful free radicals.
Quick sperm count tip: Don’t eat foods to increase sperm count and motility in front of the television set! Research shows that healthy young men who watch TV for more than 20 hours a week have almost half the sperm count of men who don’t watch much television. Exercise can help increase sperm health: men who do 15 or more hours of moderate to vigorous exercise every week have sperm counts that are 73% higher than those who don’t exercise that much, according to a study published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

3. Turkey, eggs, seafood, oysters, pumpkin seeds

“Inadequate amounts of zinc can lead to low testosterone levels and diminished sperm count,” writes Heidi Murkoff in What to Expect Before You’re Expecting. Zinc is actually quite widespread – it’s also found in beef, yogurt, oatmeal, corn.
Also, vitamin D helps make sperm swim faster. Research shows that this vitamin can improve sperm function and movement – and it’s necessary for male fertility and reproduction. You know what? Every vitamin has an effect on our overall health. True, some vitamins and minerals can boost different parts of our bodies – such as zinc to increase sperm health – but it’s important to eat a balance of ALL vitamins and minerals.
Quick sperm motility tip: Sperm supplements and vitamins such as FertilAid for Men – male fertility supplement may not increase male fertility for all men – it depends on the cause of the infertility or health issues. My husband’s low sperm count was not helped by supplements or acupuncture because his issue wasn’t treatable. But, fertility supplements are unlikely to hurt your sperm health.
Always talk to your doctor or fertility specialist about supplements for sperm production, especially if you’re taking prescription medication.

4. Salmon, sardines, anchovies, walnuts

“DHA and other essential omega-3 fatty acids help improve blood flow to the genitals and increase sexual function,” writes Heidi Murkoff in What to Expect Before You’re Expecting. “Fertile men’s sperm contains more of this essential fatty acid than the sperm of infertile men.”
Other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids include arugula, crab, shrimp, flax, and chicken. To increase sperm count, load up on foods that contain healthy omega-3s. Or, take a male fertility supplement or vitamin with these essential fatty acids.

5. Leafy green veggies, avocados, beans, whole grains

Make sure you’re getting enough folic acid, because low levels can lead to birth defects. Men with low levels of folate have more sperm with chromosomal abnormalities. To increase your sperm count, production, and motility, make sure you’re eating lots of dark green veggies and fruit. You may also want to consider a folic acid supplement.
how to increase sperm motilityQuick sperm health tip: Why fix what’s not broken? Do you know if you need to recover your sperm count or health? If you’re worried about your sperm count, production, or motility, try an at-home male male fertility test — such as the Sperm Check for Fertility (it’s a male sperm test to help determine if you have sperm problems).
Here’s what you need to know:
  • SpermCheck Fertility is an easy-to-use at-home sperm test for determining the concentration of sperm in semen.
  • You’ll know within minutes whether your sperm count is low, or if it’s in the “normal” range.
  • A positive result indicates that your sperm count is above 20 million sperm per milliliter of semen. This is a healthy male fertility level.
  • A negative result indicates that your sperm count is below the 20 million per milliliter threshold, and further testing by your doctor is probably a good idea.
Did you know that your sperm count changes every three months or so? Your body is continually producing sperm, and short-term illnesses such as the flu can change your sperm count. However, chronic low sperm count is one of the main causes of fertility issues for couples who are having trouble getting pregnant.

Research Update – Foods to Recover Sperm Count

In Foods to Fuel Your Fertility, the writer says that an excess of “not-so-fertility-friendly” fats (such as saturated and trans fats found in fried foods, processed meats and refined and processed foods such as biscuits, cakes and pastries) can decrease the membrane fluidity and flexibility necessary for healthy sperm mobility.
Diets poor in omega 3 and rich in omega 6 may also contribute to poor semen quality and sperm function. Walnuts are a good food to increase sperm count, production, and motility in men because walnuts are very rich in omega 3, as well as vitamin E, zinc, selenium and folate.

Sugar has been linked to poorer sperm health

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston linked a high intake of sugar-sweetened beverages with lower sperm motility in healthy young men.
Research from the Rochester Young Men’s study which found that men who ate a lot of fish, chicken, whole-grains, fruits and vegetables had better semen quality and motility than those who followed the more typical “western” pattern of refined grains, pizza, high-energy drinks and high intakes of red and processed meats and sweets.

Eating to increase sperm count involves eliminating fat from fried and processed food

Eating to boost semen health and get pregnant leaves little room for the not-so-fertility-friendly fats, such as saturated and trans fats. These are found in fried foods, processed meats and refined and processed foods such as biscuits, cakes and pastries.
For more tips on increasing sperm health, read Food and Fertility – The Effect of Carbs, Fats, Proteins, and Dairy.
Do you have questions about how to recover sperm motility or improve the health of your sperm? Talk to your doctor, urologist, or fertility specialist. I can’t offer medical advice.
Also – if you know anything about maxoza- L powder as a fertility supplement for men to increase sperm health, please let me know.
If you don’t know your sperm count or health, take the MicraSperm test above. It will give you an accurate and easy sperm count test in the privacy of your home. This kit includes a Screen for 3 Primary Male Fertility Parameters (including Sperm Count and Motility), as well as a microscope, slides, solutions, and sampling accessories. It’s a complete easy-to-use kit that comes with comprehensive instructions to help you analyze and interpret results.

Zobo The Local Herbal Soft Drink

What U Ate

Zobo is made by submerging hibiscus flowers into water, then adding sweetener and various flavorings. It's very similar to the Caribbean drink Sorrel, but instead of adding warm spices like cinnamon, ginger, allspice, etc.,Zobo is usually enhanced with fruit juices like pineapple, orange, lemon, as well as other flavors like mint, ginger, and vanilla.

Depending on where you live, you will find the dried herb (Hibiscus sabdariffa) needed forZobo under different names: dried hibiscus, sorrel, Roselle, hibiscus tea, karkade, all of these will work.
The herb is available in health food stores, Caribbean, and Asian markets.

It's basically an herbal iced tea high in antioxidants such as vitamin C and polyphenols.

First, you start off by steeping the herbs into a concentrated liquid,  then this can be diluted with either plain water or soda

Ingredients

2 cups dried hibiscus / sorrel
a few sprigs of fresh mint
1 - 1 1/2 cups of sugar
1 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
5 cups water

additional water / soda water / ginger-ale, depending

Making the concentrate:
Bring 5 cups of water to boil in a large pot. As soon as it reaches a boil, take the pot off of the heat, add the dried hibiscus and mint sprigs and cover.

Let the herbs steep for at least an hour, but the longer the better. You'll be left with a very rich, wine colored infusion (this really stains, so be careful handling it). Strain the infusion into a pitcher, pressing out as much extract from the flowers as you can, then stir in the sugar and orange juice.

Now you have the concentrate for the punch.

At this point, you can stir in 4 cups of cold water and chill the whole thing,
or
If you would like a fizzy version: keep it chilled as a concentrate, then top off individual servings with seltzer water or ginger-ale.

Is Your Food Really Safe?

What U Ate That question was asked on the back an Awake Magazine some years back with this same photo caption

YOU can take practical steps to enjoy safe food. However, many factors are beyond
your control. For example, you cannot personally inspect all food before you buy or
prepare it. You may have to purchase food that has been processed and shipped from
afar. And some of the food that you buy may be contaminated by dangerous chemicals in
the air, water, or soil.

In a report entitled “Foodborne Disease Control: A Transnational Challenge,” officials
from the World Health Organization state that some food safety problems “cannot
be resolved by national governments alone; they require international cooperation.”
Foodborne diseases are a global problem!

Understandably, many will question why we can confidently say that soon there will be
healthful food for all. It is because “Jehovah, the Lord of the whole earth,” promises a solution to man’s food problems. (Joshua 3:13) Some may claim that unsafe food proves that
God cannot be trusted. But think: If a waiter carelessly allows fine food to spoil, would it
be proper to blame the chef? Of course not. Similarly, humans—not the Creator—are responsible for spoiling the earth’s supply of fine food. The prevalence of unsafe food is a
HEALTHFUL FOOD FOR ALL SOON!

“A CODE OF RULES OF HEALTH”
About 3,500 years ago, Israel received the Mosaic Law. That Law protected the Israelites
from many foodborne illnesses. Consider the following instructions:
˘ Avoid unclean utensils and dishes that touched a dead animal: “Any vessel of which
some use is made will be put in water, and it must be unclean until the evening and then
be clean.”—Leviticus 11:31-34.
˘

Do not eat an animal that died of itself: “You must not eat any body already dead.”
—Deuteronomy 14:21.
˘ Eat leftovers within a short period: “On the next day what is left of it also may be eaten.
But what is left of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day is to be burned with fire.”
—Leviticus 7:16-18.
A. Rendle Short, M.D., expressed surprise that the Mosaic Law—compared with the contemporary laws of surrounding nations—should contain “so wise and reasonable a code of
rules of health.”
